Does Insurance Cover Invisalign® Aligners?

Will my insurance cover Invisalign treatment?

This is one of the most common questions people ask when they are considering or starting Invisalign treatment. Whether you’re getting braces or aligners, fitting orthodontic treatment into your budget can be a challenge, and you’ll want all the help you can get.

The good news is many dental plans cover Invisalign treatment the same way they cover braces. Depending on your provider, you may qualify for up to $3,000 in coverage for orthodontic treatment,1 including Invisalign aligners. How much coverage you can expect will depend on your coverage type, plan, and provider.

How much will the Invisalign treatment cost with insurance?

How much you can expect to pay for Invisalign treatment will depend on several factors. The complexity of your case, the number of aligners you need, and the extent of your insurance coverage all affect your out-of-pocket costs. In many cases, the cost of Invisalign treatment is comparable to the cost of braces.

The best way to know how much you can expect to spend for Invisalign treatment is to talk to your orthodontist. Need help finding an Invisalign provider? Try Invisalign’s Find a Doctor tool to find an Invisalign provider near you.

What if I don’t have insurance?

Don’t lose hope if your insurance plan won’t help with the cost of straightening your smile. There are other options available to make orthodontic treatment more accessible.

Monthly payment plans

Orthodontists often offer flexible plans, letting you pay for your treatment in monthly installments over a set period of time. Plans may differ, but they often involve setting up a financing agreement with your orthodontist and making a down payment. Then you’ll make monthly payments for the duration of the plan. Discuss the details with your orthodontist. Your orthodontist can walk you through your options for payment term, the number of monthly installments, and any interest or fees involved.

Flexible spending accounts and health savings accounts

Flexible spending accounts (FSAs) and health savings accounts (HSAs) are added options to consider when paying for aligners or braces. These accounts let you set aside pre-tax dollars for eligible medical expenses, including orthodontic treatment. By using FSAs or HSAs, you can save on Invisalign aligners by paying for them with untaxed income. Consult your employer or financial advisor to figure out eligibility for these accounts and to understand their guidelines and limitations.

Orthodontic discount plans

Orthodontic discount plans can offer cost savings for orthodontic care and treatment. These plans, which are often available through dental providers, offer discounted rates for various treatments, including orthodontics. These plans may require a membership or subscription fee.

Dental school clinics

Local dental schools can offer orthodontic care at costs that meet or are below what you would expect to pay at a private practice.7
